7 English Questions to ask people when you meet them for the first time
Hello, let's learn some questions we can ask people when we meet them for the first time. So, so many of our students aren't locals. They come into Australia and improve their English, which is amazing. And they're awesome and they meet a lot of new people. So a common question we hear at Ace Language Academy is what are the things I can ask them the first time I meet someone?
So you don't have to speak really formally and say things like where are you from? Or what do you do? Its kind of like international English and locals will understand it but we can dress it up a little bit. Use some Aussie slang and some local language to speak with others. So for example, instead of saying where are you from, it can sound quite direct and formal. So change that. And instead of saying where are you from, try saying whereabouts are you from? Whereabouts are you from? This one is amazing. Use this, use this, use this. Use this word in your speaking and conversations with people. It's amazing. So instead of saying where is it? You can say whereabouts is it? Or you're hearing about someone going to a cafe or a restaurant and they're telling you about it and instead of saying where is it? You can say whereabouts is it? Or whereabouts do you work? Whereabouts do you live?
So use whereabouts instead of where.
Another one you can say is how long have you lived in Melbourne? Or if you're speaking to another international student or traveler, you can say what brought you to Melbourne? What's the reason you came to Melbourne? It just sounds a lot nicer, instead of saying why did you come here? So try using that.
Another one is what type of visa are you on? That's a really cool question you can say. Or have you enjoyed your time in Melbourne so far? Another one is what kind of work do you do? So instead of saying do you work? What do you do for work or what's your work? You can say what kind of work do you do? Or are you studying at the moment? Oh cool, what are you studying?
So use these questions. Try 'em out, try one in the next week and see how it feels. And definitely use whereabouts. That one is fantastic.
