Sunnies. Work Mates. Knock-Offs
Okay, let's learn some Aussie slang. We have three Aussie slang words today. So the first one. Okay. Sunglasses. Okay, so most of you would know this word. Sunglasses. So in Australia, we can say sunnies. So a lot of us say sunnies, instead of sunglasses. So there's number one, sunnies.
Number two. A lot of students, and you know, people working here will refer to the people they work with as colleagues. So in Australia, colleagues, yeah, we say that a lot, or coworkers, it is quite formal. Which is okay, you know, in the workplace. Another way you can say that, is workmates. So workmates is really cool. If you're going for a drink after work with some workmates, you can say it like that. Instead of saying, "I'm going out with some colleagues," you know, loosen it up a little bit, and try saying workmates, or my friend from work, or mate from work.
Now, when you go for a drink after work, we say, we're going for a knock-off. So a knock-off means after-work drinks. That's another common, common way of saying that. So you can say, "I'm having a knock-off with some workmates tonight." I'm having a knock-off. It means having a drink when you finish work. So the three that we have there. Sunnies, workmates instead of colleagues, and knock-offs.
Try using that in your conversation this week with someone, especially in your speaking, it'll really help. And yeah, a lot of us use it here, in Melbourne. So, use them and enjoy.
